As
you know from yesterday's alert,
the NRA has cut a deal to exempt themselves from proposed
legislation that is intended to greatly curtail the free speech
and activism rights of other organizations.
Today the NRA issued a statement saying the bill "would
have undermined or obliterated virtually all of the NRA’s
right to free political speech and, therefore, jeopardized the
Second Amendment rights of every law-abiding American."
OFF has heard from some who claim the bill is not a problem
because it does not mention guns. Others have claimed that groups
like Gun Owners of America have sensationalized the bill "to
raise money." Well apparently the NRA had the same
impression of the bill that GOA had. But NRA has cut a
deal that protects them from a bill they claim creates "onerous
restrictions on free speech."
In their statement they note: "The most potent defense
of the Second Amendment requires the most adamant exercise of
the First Amendment."
Now that they have been exempted they plan no opposition to
the legislation.
